Q. Can kidney stones cause leg swelling?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Yes, kidney stones can cause leg swelling. Swelling in the legs is referred to medically as peripheral edema and is an abnormal buildup of fluid in the feet, ankles, and/or lower legs. It can be caused by a variety of medical conditions, including kidney stone disease.
When a person has a large or particularly sharp stone that lodges in the tubes connecting their kidneys to their bladder (ureters), it causes inflammation and obstruction of urine flow which results in pain known as renal colic. This pressure from obstructed urine may also lead to a back-up of fluids into the surrounding tissue, resulting in localized tissue swelling or peripheral edema.
In some cases only one leg will swell; however both may swel at different times due to alternating periods of obstruction between either ureter. In addition to swelling, other symptoms associated with renal colic include nausea and vomiting, decreased appetite due to abdominal tenderness or pain often accompanied by fever if infection is present and difficulty sleeping due to frequent night time urination or changes in daily urinary habits that become problematic over time such as straining with urination or cloudy urine unrelated otherwise known medical problems like diabetes, hypertension etc., Further confirmation can be determined through more detailed lab workups such as ultrasounds , CT scans , X-rays etc..All these tests are instrumental for getting accurate diagnosis before starting treatment depending on what kind of kidney stones the patient has ; further management includes dietary modifications & lifestyle changes with regular exercise plan depending on severity & size . Lastly there are certain medical procedures that could help reduce size of small stones like lithotripsy which involves breaking up larger stones into small fragments so they can pass out easily through natural urinary flow . At every step proper care must be taken under doctor's supervision for better outcomes!
