Q. Does hemiplegia affect your vision?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Yes, hemiplegia can affect vision in a variety of ways.
Hemiplegia is a neurological condition characterized by paralysis or weakness affecting one side of the body including face, limb and trunk. When it affects the eyes or visual pathways, it can cause impairments in reading, visual acuity, eye movements and perception. It may lead to strabismus (misalignment of the eyes) as well as diplopia (double vision).
When hemiplegic children are unable to control their gaze on objects due to lack of coordination between their head and eyes movement, it leads to difficulty maintaining binocular vision for long periods leading to reduced stereopsis (depth perception) which might restrict proper performance with two-handed activities. Also due to imbalance caused by asymmetrical posturing when using computer screens or tablets they may also get affected by recurrent episodes of blurred vision upon prolonged work sessions on digital devices leading to further complications like eyestrain & headaches due to poor posture while working at these devices.
Due to impaired ability oculomotor skills like saccades & pursuits apart from other abnormalities like reduced accommodative amplitude & convergence insufficiency along with aimless drift resulting into instability makes difficult for an individual with cerebral palsy associated with Hemi plegia even more difficult leading into reading difficulties such as slow speed , failure in controlling their gaze upon near objects like books etc.. This leads often into problems related onto visual information processing apart from perceptual deficits disturbing object recognition / identification . In conclusion , yes Hemi plegia does affect your vision significantly if not addressed early enough .
