Q. Does the Moderna vaccine cause joint swelling?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
No, the Moderna vaccine does not cause joint swelling. While a few people have reported joint pain after receiving either the Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines, according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “joint swelling is not listed among the possible side effects of either mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.”
The CDC further states that if you experience joint pain after receiving the vaccine, it is important to discuss this with your healthcare provider who can decide if additional medical evaluation is needed. Further studies are being conducted to evaluate any potential link between joint pain and receipt of these vaccines; however, current evidence suggests that severe or unusual side effects such as joint swelling are rare following administration of both mRNA COVID-19 vaccines.
