Q. What is dialysis?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Dialysis is the process of removing waste products and excess water from the blood. It is used to treat people with severe kidney failure.
There are two types of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Hemodialysis uses a machine to filter the blood. Peritoneal dialysis uses a special solution called dialysate that is put into the abdomen (belly) through a catheter. The solution flows around the intestine, where it takes up waste products and excess water.
