Conjunctivitis is treated with antibiotics, eye drops, and/or ointments. Infection causes inflammation and discharge from the eyes, so treatment focuses on clearing the infection and reducing inflammation.

If the conjunctivitis is caused by a virus, it will usually resolve on its own in a few days. If it is caused by bacteria, then antibiotic eye drops or ointment will be prescribed. These may need to be used for several days to clear the infection. If there is significant swelling or pus accumulation, then surgery may be necessary to drain the pus and relieve pressure on the eyes.
