Risdone belongs to the class of medication called an antipsychotic agent, which helps to reduce the symptoms of various mood disorders by affecting the levels of chemical messengers such as dopamine and serotonin in the brain.

It works by inhibiting the activity of dopaminergic d2 and serotonergic 5-ht2a receptors, which leads to a decrease in the neurotransmission of dopaminergic & serotonergic and therefore decreasing positive symptoms of schizophrenia (delusions and hallucinations), mania or aggression and improves your mood, thoughts or behaviour.

You are advised to take this medicine as prescribed by your doctor. However, quit this medicine immediately if you experience neuroleptic malignant syndrome (nms), characterized by fever, muscle rigidity, and altered consciousness or seizures. Don't discontinue the medication suddenly unless told by your doctor because it may worsen the symptoms.

This medication's most common side effects are insomnia, sedation, drowsiness, parkinsonism, and headache. Initially, administration of this medicine may cause a sudden decrease in blood pressure when you change positions, so it is better to get up slowly if you have been sitting or lying down. It also causes dizziness and sleepiness, so do not drive or do any activity that requires mental concentration until you know how this medicine affects you. While taking this medicine increases your weight, the only way beneficial is to modify your lifestyle changes by having a healthy diet and regular exercise, reducing these side effects.

Do not take risdone solution if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless prescribed by the doctor. Risdone solution can be given to children if prescribed by the doctor to treat conduct disorder, but it should not be given to children for treating schizophrenia or mania. Alcohol consumption needs to be avoided while on this medication as it may lead to increased drowsiness and dizziness. You are advised to be cautious while using this medicine as it may increase the risk of developing diabetes, so it is preferable to monitor your glucose regularly. Inform your doctor if you experience any unusual changes in mood or behaviour, new or worsening depression, or suicidal thoughts while taking this medicine..
