Ritomune tablet belongs to the class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by inhibiting both human immunodeficiency virus proteases (hiv-1 &hiv-2), making the enzyme incapable of producing gag-pol polyprotein precursor required to produce new cells. Therefore inhibition of this enzyme leads to the production of non-infectious immature hiv cells.

Ritomune is not a cure for hiv or aids. It decreases the production of new viruses and increases the quality of life.

Ritomune tablet is used alone or in combination with other medications. Medication must not be stopped unless told by your doctor. Even if you feel better, don’t discontinue the medicine too early because the infection may relapse or worsen. Alcohol consumption needs to be avoided while on this medication as it may lead to liver damage.

The most common side effects are taste changes, headache, nausea, diarrhoea, paresthesia (tingling or pricking sensation), dizziness, cough, abdominal pain, throat pain, and peripheral neuropathy (tingling and numbness of feet and hand). If the symptoms persist or worsen, you need to consult your doctor immediately. Inform your doctor if you have diabetes as it can increase sugar levels in the blood.

Before taking this medication, inform your doctor if you are allergic to any antibiotics or kidney or liver problems. You should also let your doctor know all the current medicines you are taking as they may cause interactions. You need to inform your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to be pregnant or nursing a baby. While taking this medication, your doctor may advise for liver function to check any issues.

While taking ritomune, tell your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms such as extreme thirst, frequent urination, extreme hunger, blurred vision, or weakness. It is crucial to inform your doctor because high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) that is not treated can cause a serious condition called ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis may become life-threatening if it is not treated at an early stage. Symptoms of ketoacidosis include dry mouth, nausea & vomiting, shortness of breath, breath that smells fruity, and decreased consciousness.
